Therapeutic exercise is great for mental engagement, as well as the physical body. Different exercises target different muscle groups and are a big part of both injury prevention and recovery, as well as maintenance. We can also enhance proprioception (limb awareness) and balance in dogs with neurological deficits. Muscle strengthening, posture re-education and postural transitioning, increasing muscle mass and gait training are all aspects of therapeutic exercise. Therapeutic exercises can be different and adjusted depending on age and capabilities of dogs, but they can be beneficial for ALL ages!

TENS uses electrical stimulation to interrupt the pain signal to the brain and spinal cord, therefore helping with pain reduction and muscle relaxation. This is a non-invasive treatment in which I will use small pads and conductive gel on the skin. A treatment typically starts around 5 minutes to get the patient used to the tingling sensation, and can be increased to up to 20 minutes.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation is used to strengthen muscles that have started to atrophy due to disuse. This can be due to limited weight bearing after an injury or after an injury causing your dog to become paralyzed. EMS is delivered in the same way as TENS, with pads and conductive gel on the skin. A low electrical current stimulates the nerves at the nerve-muscle junction, which causes the muscle to contract. A treatment can last from 5-10 minutes per limb/treatment area.

Massage therapy has many benefits including relief of muscle tension and soreness, reduction of scar tissue, anxiety relief, lymphatic drainage, pain relief, increased circulation and more! Sessions can last from 5 minutes up to 30 minutes. Most dogs typically won't sit still for longer than 30 minutes, so session will depend on each dog.
