Also referred to as a death doula, an end-of-life doula is similar to a doula one might use when preparing to have a baby. I will help you through the entire end-of-life journey with your pet. This includes an end-of-life plan, support visits with your veterinarian, assist with quality-of-life assessments, day-to-day support during your pet's journey, and grief support before and after death.
I completed a certification as a companion animal end-of-life doula through the University of Vermont. I have always been incredibly passionate about palliative care, hospice, geriatric pets, and the end-of-life journey. I decided to pursue this certification so that I would be equipped with all the tools I need to provide support to pet parents when that time comes for their beloved pet. I also wanted to be able to be an advocate for pets and their parents during one of the most important transitions in their lives. I am able to provide support for you and your pet before, during, and after the death of your baby.
Planning ahead when you're clear headed instead of making decisions in the heat of the moment can allow the death journey to be more peaceful for you, your family and your beloved pet. This also ensures that you have some sort of control over the process and are less likely to have regrets. Of course, things will not always go according to plan, but having a guideline to follow will help immensely. I will go over all your wishes with you from how you want the peaceful passing to go (home euthanasia vs clinic vs natural death), to aftercare (burial vs cremation vs aquamation), to memorial products, to grief support. This service can be provided in-person or virtually.
Everyone needs support during this very special journey, some need it in different ways. I can be there to support you in different ways. Sometimes that might be needing someone to talk to about your feelings on the end-of-life journey, sometimes it might be needing someone to explain the death process, sometimes it may just be wanting and needing to talk to someone about your pet and all the memories you have together. I can be all of those things for you. I can also provide support by going to vet appointments with you. Sometimes, when we are going through very hard things, we may not be able to take in everything the doctor is saying at the appointment. I can be there to take all that in and discuss the information and options with you later after you've had a chance to process. I can also be present with you during euthanasia appointments to help advocate for you and your pet, if you feel you may not be able to do so. After death, some pet parents may have traditions such as rituals or life celebrations. I can help come up with ideas you can memorialize and honour your pet. This service can also be provided in-person or virtually.
A common misconception about grief is that it only occurs after something has taken place. However, anticipatory grief can be incredibly hard on us as well. This is when we start grieving before our loved one has actually gone. The grieving process starts before the death actually takes place. Although I am not a counselor, I can provide grief support in the form of talking, art, exercises, etc. I can also provide resources for animal communicators, grief counseling services, and grief support groups. This service can be provided in-person or virtually.
